The first in a three part mini series based on the book by Sarah Waters. Follows Nancy Astley (Rachel Stirling), later called Nan King as she discovers life and love beyond the oyster parlor she grew up in. Most significant in this episode is the friendship she forms with male impersonator/performer Kitty Butler (Keeley Hawes).

Rachael Stirling & Keeley Hawes

In this scene Stirling is dancing with a boy from the orchestra after a performance. Hawes leaves the theater (or is this a restaurant?), obvious distressed by the fact that Stirling was having a good time with the boy. Stirling follows her out to a carriage, where they head back to their room. After arguing Hawes tells Stirling 'I hate the way you make me feel!'. They proceed to kiss in the carriage.

Somewhat a continuation of the last scene. This one begins in their room where they continue to kiss and undress each other. The two make love (this is fairly graphic - nice eye candy). The scene cuts out on the two falling asleep in each others arms.

Rachael Stirling & Keeley Hawes

Another scene towards the end of this episode shows a series of clips of various moments between Stirling and Hawes. Many of which show them kissing, and generally loving each other, mixed in with their performances on stage. The end of these clips shows Hawes under the covers making love to Keeley, who is vocally showing her appreciation of what Hawes is doing.

This was an awesome book, and also a great movie. One of the few movies I can say did the book justice. I loved the first part, especially the romance between the two main characters. There were a few other scenes, especially the last scene at the end - I chose to omit this so that it wouldn't spoil the cliffhanger. This series is definitely worth watching.

Nan (Rachael Stirling) is an oyster girl from a working class family in a sea side town. She is very shy & is unsure why she doesn't find her boyfriend attractive. She goes to a local stage show with her family. This is where she sees Kitty (Keeley Hawes) and becomes infatuated with her. Suddenly her heart is awakened. She strikes up a friendship with Kitty and gets caught up in the show business world. Which leads to all kinds of misadventures.

Nan is introduced to Kitty backstage in her dressing room. Kitty gets undressed behind a screen but Nan watches her in the mirror & sees her breasts. Kitty asks if Nan has a man. Kitty says her goodbyes with a kiss of Nans hand. Nan looks away as her hand smells of oysters, but Kitty says she "smells like a mermaid". Nan blushes & they look deep into each others eyes.

Actresses:
Rachael Stirling & Keeley Hawes

Nan tries on Kitty's suit while she's out. Kitty comes back to find Nan in her suit looking like a boy. Kitty says "what a handsome boy you make Nan" "Why a girl could fall for a boy like you" and Kitty asks if she can kiss her. So they kiss & Nan can't believe her luck.

Actresses:
Rachael Stirling & Keeley Hawes

Nan & Kitty have been rehearsing a sketch and have to kiss quite a few times. Nan is in "heaven".

Nan & Kitty have been invited to an after show party. Nan dances with a band member & Kitty gets jealous & says shes going home & that Nan can find her own way home. So Nan runs after Kitty, they argue & get in the cab still arguing they kiss passionatley. They get back to their room & make very passionate love.

This is full of lesbian love scenes & it has funny moments too. I love this three part drama adaptation of a classic novel, it's a must see for any lesbian.
