After being denied a promotion at the university where she teaches, a woman who's a brilliant musicologist, impulsively visits her sister, who runs a struggling rural school in Appalachia. There she stumbles upon the discovery of her life - a treasure trove of ancient Scots-Irish ballads, songs that have been handed down from generation to generation, preserved intact by the seclusion of the mountains. With the goal of securing her promotion, the woman ventures into the most isolated areas of the mountains to collect the songs and finds herself increasingly enchanted - not only by the rugged purity of the music, but also by the raw courage and endurance of the local people as they carve out meaningful lives against the harshest conditions. It is not, however, until she meets a handsome, hardened war veteran and talented musician - that she's forced to examine her motivations. Is the "Songcatcher," as the man insists, no better than the men who exploit the people and extort their land?

Actresses: Jane Adams & E. Katherine Kerr
The woman is returning home late one evening. She rushes into the schoolhouse where her sister (Adams) and the school head-mistress (Kerr) also board. She is so excited about a discovery, that she has made, that she barges into the bedroom and finds her sister naked in the arms of the school headmistress.
Nothing really erotic here but the surprise is delightful. There are scenes earlier in the movie that very subtlely hint at this relationship.

Actresses: Jane Adams & E. Katherine Kerr
Four of them are on a picnic outing. Adams and Kerr wander off into the woods together and carry on in a great make out scene. They are suckling each others breasts when they are discovered by one of the local boys. The resulting aproar becomes tha basis for the tragic drama that ensues.
This is really a great kissing scene.

The movie is great for it's own sake but these little lesbian scenes make it a truly special movie. I highly recommend it. It is not an erotic movie but the lesbian pieces are scintillating.
