Claire (Lauren Ambrose) is conflicted about her feelings for her friend Edie (Mena Suvari), a lesbian performance artist.

Actresses:
Lauren Ambrose & Mena Suvari

Claire (Lauren Ambrose) and Edie (Mena Suvari) park in front of Claire's house after going to the movies. Edie leans over and kisses Claire, but Claire doesn't kiss back. "Claire, what's going on?" Edie asks. She says she could be into Claire if Claire is into her, but she needs to hear Claire say it. Claire says she can't say it. She then says, "this is what I do know," and says something like she wants to be with Edie all the time, and she feels that Edie is this special person and she makes Claire feel more special. Then Claire says, "Sorry, that was really, really stupid." Edie replies, "No it's not," then leans over and kisses her again. It seems that Claire is responding this time, but she suddenly pulls away, saying "I'm sorry," and runs out of the car.

Actresses:
Lauren Ambrose & Mena Suvari

Claire (Ambrose) is in her room, frantically searching for something, when Edie (Suvari) appears at her doorway. "Edie, What are you doing here?" Claire asks. "Claire, I just have to be with you," Edie replies. "I need you." Then Edie laughs, breaking the tension. "You left your wallet in my car," she says, pulling said wallet from her purse. She continues, "Maybe on some subconscious level, you left the wallet because..." Claire interrupts her - "Ok, I give up. Let's just sleep together."
Claire then goes into the bathroom to brush her teeth. Edie follows her in and asks, "I thought it wasn't what you wanted." Claire replies, "It's not." She goes on to say, "Part of me wants it to happen, part of me doesn't. But what if the part of me that doesn't want it doesn't want it because I'm scared." She adds, "Besides, I owe you one," referring to an earlier part of the episode. Edie says, "Okay - you're on," then takes Claire by the hand and leads her into the bedroom.
No kissing in this scene, but a great buildup. (Quoted dialogue is not verbatim.)

The entire season seemed to be leading up to Claire and Edie getting together, and this episode was the beginning of the payoff. Hopefully, there will be alot more to it in future episodes. Six Feet Under is a terrific show, and perhaps this storyline will expand its audience.
