An adaptation of a real life murder case which happened in France in the early 1900's...think it was in the 1930's. Originally called the "Papin Affair" because that is the real family name of the two sisters who murdered their employers. This case has been the basis of many psycho-analytists who were fascinated about the relationship between the two women. This film is one of the more common intepretations that exists on the nature of the relationship between the two sisters.

Actresses:
Jodhi May & Joely Richardson

I cant rememeber the specific sexual scenes, but there are about 2-3 relatively explicit sexual scenes...not so much on sexual explicit..but more on passionate explicitness....the fact that we are watching an incestual relationship makes things complicated and we cant look at this film on a physical level.

Personally...I like this movie and can even place this amongst my personal favourites. I like this movie because of how the creative team was able to explore the nature of the relationship between the two sisters without being judgemental or portraying in a discrimnatory light. I watched it with morbid fascination.
I do have to admit that the chemistry generated by Jodhi and Julie was absolutely fantastic. Both women were very passionate. Any love scenes were not borne out of lust but more out of the mental state of each sister. The later love scenes had a tangible air of forbidden love and desperation to it, which both actresses were fantastic in portraying...so much so that u cant help but feel the line between incestous love and needy love is blurred. This movie makes you think and is very intriguing, watching the breakdown of the mental sanity of the two women.
