An adaptation of the Jeanette Winterson novel, this mini-series details the coming of age of Jess (Charlotte Coleman) who is raised by her evangelical mother in the northwest of England. Due to her religious upbringing, Jess has always been and outsider, but then she meets Melanie (Cathryn Bradshaw) and invites her to join the church.

Actresses: Charlotte Coleman & Cathryn Bradshaw
Coleman and Bradshaw are staying at the home of a friend. They are sharing a bed on the floor and both slip under the covers naked (the gesture indicative, at this stage, only of close friendship). Coleman starts joking and eventually the two laugh so much that Bradshaw ends up rolling on top of her friend, and they kiss, after which they make love. The scene is quite lyrical.

Actresses: Charlotte Coleman & Cathryn Bradshaw
Not as explicit as the previous one. Coleman has snuck into Bradshaw's room (they have been prevented from seeing each other) and the two girls sit on the bed and talk. Eventually Coleman says, 'make love to me', to which Bradshaw replies, 'I can't'. Coleman kisses her and then the scene ends, implying that they do sleep together.

This is a wonderful miniseries, an excellent adaptation of an excellent novel. The love scenes are extremely powerful within the context of the film, marking a decisive turning point for the character Jess. It is one of the few occasions where the correct descriptor is 'making love', rather than 'having sex'. The girls look like normal women, and look as if they are in love and doing something for the first time. It breaks your heart. Recommended for people who like a storyline and characters to go with their lesbian sex.
