Told in flashback, this is the story of the investigation of a drug overdose by a college senior (Mia Kirshner). Did her "friends" from an exclusive rich girl sorority have anything to do with her untimely OD? Unfortunately, Kirshner can't help explain things because she's in a near-death coma for the entire movie.
Kirshner's story is told by the girls (and an occasional boy) who came to know her because she was paired up with the Alpha Girl of the rich bitch pack. Kirshner is from the wrong side of the tracks, and some of her motives of "fitting in" are connected with her desperate desire to find some source of financial aid for her goal of going to law school. The audience will come to wonder if Kirshner is the innocent, "poor little girl" she initially seems.

Actresses: Mia Kirshner & Dominique Swain
Dominique Swain, is a member of the rich bitches who comes to befriend Kirshner. Although it seems that all of the girls in the sorority like to play around with girl-girl stuff -- dancing together in a "hoochie mama" sorta way -- Swain is into it for real. She initiates a seduction scene with the supposedly inexperienced Kirshner by talking about how many guys they've each "done it" with. But with nary a transition word, Swain leans in and kisses Kirshner, saying, "that wasn't so hard, was it?"
The girls then proceed to go at it like experienced porn actresses. Lots of heavy kissing, heavy petting, "take your shirt off, NOW," etc. The scene ends with an image of the two gals waking up together -- actually, Kirshner wakes up earlier and sneaks out of bed. Was she manipulating the whole situation, we wonder?

Actresses: Mia Kirshner & Dominique Swain
The flashback continues, later that nigh at a party. In a dance scene, Swain is "dyking it up" with her fellow girls, with specific interest in the lovely Kirshner, who is drunkenly flinging herself at people, mostly boys. The two characters share a more-than-friendly kiss, then Swain follows Kirshner into a room and tries to go for a little more action, crawling over top of her supposed girlfriend. But Kirshner wants no more of that, and pushes poor Swain away.

Actresses: Mia Kirshner & Dominique Swain
There are two more lesbian scenes, but they were so quick that I'll combine them into one mention. The flashback that Swain is describing ends, and we're back into the present, as she talks with a sherif who is investigating the accident/crime. Swain says the sherrif just wouldn't understand the situation; he responds: "Why not? Is it because I'm a cop?" No, she replies: "It's because you're a man." Then she kisses a fresh-from-the-shower sorority sister, who is drop-dead gorgeous (I think she was played by Rachel True, one of the main actresses in the movie, but I could be wrong).
The final lesbian scene was fleeting -- in the very last bit of the movie, after the mystery has been solved and we see the disposition of each of the main characters, we see Swain in bed with a naked guy, dozing, but then she stirs in her sleep, turns to the other side of the bed, where there is a naked girl. (I don't know who played the girl.)

Dominique Swain definitely "dykes it up" in this movie. Having also done a nice job of playing a lipstick lesbian in "Girl," I was pleased to see that she wasn't afraid of being typecast as a dyke by playing another lesbian role. And naughty Mia Kirshner is very easy on the eyes (if you subscribe to a patriarchal view of feminine beauty, as I do). I was pleased to see both Swain and Kirshner just throw caution to the wind on screen and try to have a little sexy fun.
And this movie is about nothing other than having fun, despite the seemingly serious plot line. It's getting lousy reviews, but that's because (I think) the reviewers are taking it much too seriously. If you go to it expecting to have a good time, with some unintentionally funny moments, and you're ready to just let the sleaze roll, you could have a blast. I recommend it to take a date to.
