This gorgeous, sexy, exotically conceived reinterpretation of Georges Bizet's classic opera is set in modern-day Dakar, on the coast of West Africa. The film stars two charismatic, statuesque beauties: Djeinaba Diop Gai as Karmen and Stephanie Biddle as the warden of a women's prison where Karmen is initially held. It sticks closely to the story of a free-spirit who seduces all who come into contact with her (including the smitten Stephanie Biddle), until she reaches her inevitable tragic end.

From a movie review:
In one of the director's boldest strokes, he makes Karmen bisexual. Her great love turns out to be the female prison warden, played by Stephanie Biddle. But it is a "sad love" because Biddle realizes she cannot hold onto Karmen because what makes her so free also makes her unattainable. In fact, unlike the possessive Lamine, Biddle's character allows Karmen to leave prison thus losing her.

Actresses:
Djeïnaba Diop Gaï & Stephanie Biddle

There is a very sensuous dance scene at the beginning and a short but beautiful (even if not that explicit) love scene between the two women. Djeïnaba Diop Gaï has an incredible body and expressitivity.

I enjoyed this "different" movie from Africa.
