Nowak, theoretician of literature, is so eclipsed by his profession that he sees the world as a function of literature. His wife however refuses to be controlled by theory. She leaves him. Nowak takes on a cosmic, rather cosmic-erotic dimension. Raped and seduced, idealized and revered by women on the verge of madness he finds the hard rock of reality: it is his wife, returned home.
