This movie is based on the secret part of Anais Nin's famous Diary. It was Anais' wish that these writings wouldn't be released until everyone mentioned in them had passed away.
Anais Nin (Maria de Medeiros) met Henry Miller in Paris 1931 and later on his wife June (Uma Thurman). She had sexual relationships with both of them but neither Henry nor June knew that the other one was involved with Anais.

Actresses:
Uma Thurman & Maria de Medeiros

The two are at an underground lesbian club. It is the end of a long build up in their gravitation towards each other and they are physically close to each other and delight in it as young lovers do. A slow dance starts up and they dance together closely, murmuring to one another. The feeling that de Medeiros is going to melt further into Thurman's arms pervades the atmosphere. Then they begin to kiss as the room swirls around them.

Actresses:
Brigitte Lahaie & Maïté Maillé

De Medeiros goes with her husband to a brothel where she selects the two women to perform a show for them. One, Lahaie, appears sexually strong and confident while Maillé appears shy and timid. Upstairs in a private room the show starts. Lahaie seems to be forcing a reluctant Maillé to open up to her. After a while Lahaie asks her audience if they would like anything else and de Medeiros, watching intently, says "yes - stop pretending to be a man". The two continue and the sighs of pleasure noticably increase.

Actresses:
Uma Thurman, Maria de Medeiros & Brigitte Lahaie

De Medeiros is relating a dream she had. In it, Thurman (who sometimes transforms to Lahaie though) is in her room and they make love. While she relates it we see what she is describing.

Actresses:
Uma Thurman & Maria de Medeiros

Prior to this scene, Thurman, de Medeiros and Thurman's husband had some drinks and the husband fell asleep. Thurman and de Mediros goes to another room in the house and it's obvious from the very beginning that they're going to sleep with each other.
They talk for a while. de Medeiros who's sitting on the bed stands up, undresses a bit and then lays down beside Thurman. They begin kissing each other and as the scene progresses they get more and more excited, especially de Medeiros. Thurman is a bit hesitant because her husband is sleeping in another room and also because she thinks she's not beautiful enough.

This is another of my absolute favorite movies, it has this French movie style with slow tempo, beautiful imageries and very sensual alltogether, which is something I like very much. All lesbian scenes are incredibly erotic but I especially enjoyed the very long build-up to Anais and June's first kiss. It started right when Anais first saw June, continued with a scene where June had come out of the shower and Anais was checking her out to finally when they were slow-dancing at a lesbian club.

This is a high production film and the acting of course is excellent. The girls portray real passion, especially the angel-faced Maria, and the result is enormously sexy. There's that all-too-rare beautiful build-up too, making you beg for them to finally kiss each other. In the autobiography of the actor who plays her husband, he relates that Maria was excited about making the film; "I get to sleep with men, I get to sleep with women, I get to sleep with everyone!" The final scene has to be one of my all-time favourites. Dynamite!

Kingkenny:
I must agree with the previous review! This film captures your immangination of the era these charaters lived. The actresses are gorgeously photograghed and portayed. The lesbian scences were erotic. If you look closely you see the old world butch-femme roles in the bar scene. (A touch of history!) I highly recommend it.

harmless:
This movie paints a flattering and charming picture of Paris in 1931, without all the flash and glamour you normally see in movies made in Paris. When de Medeiros in scene #2 tells Lahaie, "Stop pretending you are a man," it raises the scene and all love scenes after it to a new level. This isn't porn at all, it's erotica among the finest made.
