This is the true story about two teenage girls from New Zealand who met in school and developed an obsessive relationship. The mother of one of the girls wanted to break up their relationship but is killed by the two girls.

Actresses:
Kate Winslet & Melanie Lynskey

Winslet and Lynskey have come home from the Cinema. They drop on a bed and Lynskey leans over Winslet and they begin kissing. Next segment shows them laying there on the bed gently caressing and lip-kissing each other after having made love.

A very well made movie. Their relationship isn't exploited in the movie. It is shown for what it was, a painful view of two mentally disturbed teenagers who found solace with each other in the fantasy world which they had created.

The scene where Kate Winslet & Melanie Lynskey are in bed together is actually a great bit of acting. The two girls have developed an elaborate fantasy world. During the act of sex, one is always pretending to be a man. So it's actually a fantasy/phychosis, rather than a full-on lesbian encounter. The fact that it's based on a true story only makes it more interesting. And to see these two actresses later develop more marketable careers is good, because they showed such maturity and ability in this movie, made on a low budget by the future director of the LOTR trilogy.

First off this movie is excellent, the director puts together a great true story and the fantasy world of the two girls, the relationship that develops between the two girls is great and the scene after the cinema a marvel!

Overhyped, overexposed and over. I love Ms. Kate ...am deeply attracted to her, but she's so young here that it was hard to look past the overacting. No thank you...I'd rather got to Hell than watch Heavenly Creatures again

The Troubleshooter:
I've always liked this scene really. I guess it's because of the long buildup, and the way Lynskey wraps her arms around Winslet as they kiss. And just for the record, Lynskey grew up to be a pretty hot looking woman.

Kingkenny:
Stunning images with a many layered, compelling story. Few films let you glimpse the psyche of the truly disturbed. The performances were so terrific that to avoid empathizing with their emotional pain and torment was impossible. I highly recommend it.

This is Winslet's feature film debut. For such a serious subject I think she did a fantastic job as did Lynskey. It was a disturbing film that I just couldn't stop watching. Anyone who has not yet seen this movie. I urge you to rent it. You won't regret it.

The film 'Heavenly Creatures' deals with the fine line between friendship between the two girls whom the story centres around and the love they have for another.
Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet return from the cinema in a state of hysterical terror that they have worked themselves into. In the safety of Juliet's room, they kiss passionately for the first time. As soon as this act has occurred, the scene morphs into the Borovnian royal castle.
Kate Winslet comes back into view naked. She smiles and we soon realise that both Kate and Melanie are in the nude. Gradually, their bodies move towards one another and we watch as they hold and kiss each other, demonstrating fully just how much the characters love one another.
Both scenes are handled with incredible skill and composure. They are shot in such a way that no sense of sleazy explotation is generated. What we see is the beauty in the girls' love. Not once does any ugliness arise from the scene. Both Lynskey and Winslet make you feel that you are never sure whether they are lesbians or not, which is incredibly intuitive of them. Subsequently, they use their skills as actresses to help carry the film, in these scene, as much as in the other non-explicit scenes. What comes across most from these 2 actresses is the fact that the time in their lives and their emotional make-up helped to shape their performances to generate something extraordinary on the screen.
As a result of this film, Winslet's film career simply took off and her talent as an actress propelled her into movie superstardom. The opposite happened where Lynskey was concerned, as she is still no nearer to major movie stardom, but in this film, more than any other either of them have done, their acting styles really complemented one another. Given the right circumstances and the right story(not this kind of story, as they could have only done this kind of film once in their lives), they could make another movie and turn it into a modern classic.
