This movie does not have much of a story, although it does have a beginning and an ending.
A beautiful and mysterious painter (Agathe de la Boulaye) sees a nightclub singer (Claire Keim) and becomes obsessed. The singer, who is called "The Girl," takes Boulaye home -- but just for one night, she says. Reality turns out to be quite different, as both become increasingly obsessesd with each other. Meanwhile, danger mounts as The Girl's boss, a shadowy pimp, enters the picture and tries to break up the relationship -- using any means possible.

A few scenes later, Boulaye reclines fully-clothed on Keim's bed. Keim enters wearing a robe, which she drops to the floor, revealing her nude beauty. She whispers, "Make love to me with your clothes on." Hot but brief! A couple minutes after the love scene ends, they kiss as Boulaye leaves.

Boulaye and Keim, all dolled up, slow-dance in a nightclub and whisper sweet nothings in each others' ears. They walk home from the club and make love deliriously. We see Keim's face as she is moved to an ecstactic state by her lover. A smokey saxophone plays in the background. As far as this viewer is concerned, the movie was renting for this three minute scene alone!
There are premonitions of their dark future when Keim, the wordly-wise night club singer, asks Boulaye during their love-making, "What do you know about real life?"

Boulaye arrives home to find her friend and sometimes-lover (N'kake) waiting for her. "This isn't the first time for us, and it won't be the last," N'kake says. They kiss langorously, but nothing more is shown.

A few scenes later, we see some post-lovemaking talk between Boulaye and her friend/lover, N'kake. Boulaye uses her as a model for a figure study.

After a brief separation -- the mercurial nightclub singer, Keim, had told Boulaye to "go away" -- they reunite with a kiss in the nightclub. Keim takes Boulaye home and they make slow, sensuous love. This is probably the hottest scene in the movie, but it doesn't last as long as one might prefer....
There is no more lovemaking after the first 30 minutes, but as a bonus for those who appreciate the feminine form, we occasionally see the painter attending a figure drawing class with a lovely nude model.

Grouping together the remaining lesbian scenes of the movie, which are not as intense as the earlier scenes, and they are generally about advancing the plot anyway.

Keim talks in the bath while Boulaye listens. Finally -- slightly fed up -- Boulaye lifts her lover out of the bath, wraps her in a towel, and puts her on her bed. Alas, it does not go anywhere from there.

After a rather petty argument, Keim and Boulaye kiss and press their bodies together while standing up. Keim says: "Fucking's damn good with you, lover. But it won't last, I warn you." Keim whispers other naughty words, as if turning herself on by playing the role of a foul-mouthed man, and we see them kiss in slow motion.

Having been summoned to Keim's apartment, Boulaye comes in and they kiss heatedly. They are interrupted by a man -- Keim's boss -- who tries to force his way into the apartment, though they manage to fight him off. They kiss again, and then we see them the next morning, in bed, holding each other tightly.

The lovers, increasingly intimidated by the evil men who run Keim's nightclub, lie in bed together and talk about what they should do.

Boulaye brings Keim a gun for protection. They kiss a few times, as if their passion is stoked by the danger.

The movie reaches its climax -- which I won't reveal here -- except that the two lovers are reunited one final time.

This is a classic independent movie -- not for everyone, that's for sure -- and I liked it. You have to be willing to just roll with this one, since it doesn't come anywhere near making the story clear. And yet, the various twists and turns are not surprising -- which, in a way, makes the movie seem more true to life.
