Debra Winger is a Justice Dept. investigator researching the case of a sexy young widow, Theresa Russell, who is suspected of murdering off her wealthy husbands for their money.

She finally finds Russell in Hawaii at a luxurious Hotel. One day both of them attends a beginners course in scuba diving. Winger sees this as a chance to get to know Russell, so when the students are pairing off for a resuscitation exercise, she asks if Russell would like to team up with her. Next Russell is laying on her back with Winger kneeling beside her and giving her mouth to mouth. She pauses and jokes that she's not coming on to her, then continues with the exercise.

Throughout the movie, Winger shows a fascination with The Black Widow that goes beyond investigative interest. There is a scene where Winger is looking on some images of Russell and she walks forward to a projected close-up image of her face. She moves one of her fingers on Russell's lips very sensually.
Definite lesbian undertones also exist in the relation between the two female characters. There's a very sexy scene of them talking in the woods while laying on the ground that marks more clearly the attraction between them.
Finally, at the end there is a kiss between them after a small silver spider is exchanged.
