| suba.com, unknown date: You'd think she was describing kissing Hitler by the reaction the quirky singer/songwriter received for her breakthrough hit "I Kissed a Girl." But she wasn't. She was just describing- with disarming honesty and little-girl excitement-the naughty thrill of her first female kiss. Perhaps the song's feel-good appeal and straightforward lyrics ("It was just like kissing me/Only better") actually made it even more subversive than the frankly sexual songs that are in heavy rotation on Top 40 formats. Sobule has been coy-but never defensive-about her own sexuality. She wants us to know that she really has kissed girls, and that she definitely likes guys, but she shies away from calling herself bisexual. "I've never said anything about that, but I'll take love wherever I can get it!" she laughs, "I mean, when I was a poor, struggling songwriter, I was getting it all over the place. Now that I'm making it, I can truly say I feel asexual, y'know?" She recalls having a crush at 13 on her best female friend while simultaneously fawning over the Big Man On Campus. "I had a mother tell me that her 13-year-old daughter was entering a confusing stage in her adolescence and that she was grateful for a song like mine for making her daughter feel normal. I wish there would have been a song like mine around when I was growing up." bi.org, unknown date: US singer Jill Sobule mentions "I've been in relationships with both men and women - but none has worked out for me". Note: The contributor of the abovie information from bi.org writes in his email to me: I haven't re-found the remaining article yet, but Jill later apologized for being reluctant to declare herself openly bisexual. She more or less said "I've travelled a lot... I've had a bisexual life." | ||
